Why did you choose Roberts?

It has always been a dream for me to study in the United States, so as soon as I was done with high school in India, I started auditioning for college. I had never heard about Roberts prior to my auditions, but the family I was staying with during my visit in the United States told me to give it a try. On my audition day, as soon as I stepped on campus I knew it was meant to be. And everything fell into place from there.

What are your majors/concentrations? And why did you choose it/them?

Vanakkam (Greetings) My name is Sandra, I am an international student from India, and I am vocal music performance major with a jazz minor. I chose this major and minor because I knew from a young age that I wanted to perform, but perform with a purpose to Glorify God no matter what I do. Roberts has taught me not only that, but how to develop character beyond my gifts and talents.

What do you see yourself doing as a career? Are you open or pretty set on your paths/goals?

I love trying out new things, and Roberts has never shied my enthusiasm to do so. Even though most everything is a new experience when you’re an international student, I have been encouraged to try new paths even if I may not excel in it. Hence my career path and goal is (no matter what genre or means) –

“to use music and performance to bring the message of God’s love and the educational and healing aspects of music here in the United States, back home, and anywhere around the world.”

Roberts has helped me in developing that and my skills as a leader with several opportunities within and outside my department, especially as a Residential Assistant.

How has it been adjusting to college life? What has been the biggest adjustment/change?

Going into my senior year, I still feel that there is always change happening whether it is personal or spiritual growth. I have always known my character to be adaptable, and Roberts has always promoted  healthy growth by creating that space and a community that supports each and everyone. Even though we were in a pandemic, Roberts persevered with courage that helped me continue despite the new normal. The faculty, staff and my fellow peers have helped me adjust from day one of my arrival and continuously do so. Looking back, my struggle sometimes was learning the American way, the system is very different, but it has helped me excel. I love the various learning and teaching styles. There has only been growth.

Do you have any favorite memories/ favorite things about college so far?

My favorite memories I have made here at Roberts are hanging out in the Cox lounge on the second floor jamming with friends, all the floor events with my residents, and my favorite of all, my first time seeing snow fall. The reason that is my favorite memory is because it was before I had to sing with the Roberts Chorale and everyone was excited for me to experience snow falling. Their reaction to my amusement of snow brought me so much joy.

Any advice for other students who have multiple interests or are exploring career options?

College is the best place to find your path, and Roberts is the best place to explore that path YOU decide. The liberal arts system gives you the opportunity to dip your toes into different fields, and with Roberts’s exceptional community and the support you will get, I say,

TAKE THAT CHANCE! “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste it, to experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
