The commonality of changing majors. Whether we are aware of it or not, changing your major is actually very common. In fact, most students do it at least once within their time at college. While some may not change it, others do it up to 1-3 times. Many students don’t know what they want to do with a carer choice until after they graduate. Sometimes, their job may not be related to their college major at all. With this in mind, it is important to realize that it is okay for students to not yet know the carer path they want to take.

Statistics on changing majors. About a third of students switch majors in college. On top of that, about one in 9 who were pursuing a bachelor’s degree changed their major twice. From these statistics, we can see how it is evident that changing your major at least once in college is very common. However, some majors in particular have a much higher rate of being dropped. The majors with the highest drop rate include:

  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Math

Is dropping your major bad? One of the biggest assumptions with dropping a major is that it is considered a bad thing. However, this is inaccurate as it is actually very good for students. It allows them to explore various majors, choose different areas of study, and discover what most interests them. If a student is questioning whether or not they should change their major, we should encourage them to do so in order to find a field of study that best suits them.
